About
October 20, 2006
Hey. I’m Tina. I’ve attended a UU church since 1998, was unchurched before that, except for what I call the practice of writing. In my church I have been on the RE committee (til they asked me to leave cuz I yelled at the kids–all of which were mine–mostly kidding here), done the church newsletter, am currently a worship co-chair, and am soon to take over the church website. In my work life, I’ve worked for lawyers, aersospace engineers, County wonks and for three little tyrants. I’ve been a columnist, a stay-at-home, mom, and now I work for a UU organization where I am delighted to be in the presence of some really wonderful people with really great ideas. This is my personal blog and has nothing to do with my work–but my work does influence a lot of my UU life, so it may show up here. If you look hard, you can figure out where I work. You can even make fun of some of the stuff that I do there. That’s okay. I do my best, mostly, as do the people around me.
I started the blog cuz I wanted to share the parenting journey with other UU parents and make sure that I wasn’t turning out psychopaths. I’ve found lots of great advice here and in other mom-blogs beyond the UU universe. It’s pretty cool to make these connections and sometimes just to vent; other times just to question. Right now, things are a little dicey in my personal life with a sick parent and two teenage daughters (and another coming along soon enough). But it is just what it is. Life.
Here’s my disclaimer: I am NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, putting myself out here as an expert on UU parenting. In fact, I am more the less-than-UUmom, in ways too numbered to list anywhere. I am still addicted to white sugar and flour (a weakness I’ve passed along to all my girls) as well as some television shows that could be considered the white sugar and flour of television; I don’t have a vegetable garden (unless you count the frozen section at the local supermarket); and I have in the past and may use in the future the tired, authoritarian response, “because I said so” in the hope of thwarting the democratic process in my very own home.
Perhaps this is why I wanted to do this blog. Because I have people in my community who don’t raise their voices to their children, who do create meals from what they raise or grow in their yards, and who do act in ways that support and affirm the tenets of our chosen faith tradition. And I want to do better–as a mother, and as someone who is deeply concerned about the state of the world I am leaving to those children I love.
Stop by. Leave me a message. Be nice. I will, too. Mostly.

Tina,
You are so special. Keep this up. It is good for you and will be for me. I will try to keep up as well.

My dear Tina,
You continue to amaze me. Your children are blessed to have you as their mother. I hope that I am still around when they are grown; I want to see the interesting, strong women they will surely become.
Love,
Gretchen

Hi, I just found your website. I’m a budding UU. I have been going to a local UU church for a few months, and really like it. I’m off to read more of your blog.
Hugs!
