Priceless

We went away for the weekend with my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law and her husband.  We went to St. Louis and attended Friday night’s Cubs-Cardinals match-up.  Our family of five in our Cubs regalia (though I threatened to wear my Dodger’s hat just to throw everyone off), while the in-laws all wore their Cardinal red (except for Uncle Ken, who wore a Hawaiian shirt.  After years in the military, I think he abhors uniforms of all kinds–including Cardinal t-shirts.

Throughout the weekend the eight of us changed places in the two vehicles quite a bit.  Well, mostly Uncle Harlo and our three girls moved from vehicle to vehicle with each stop.  So, one night, as we were driving down the road, my husband looked in the rearview mirror and said to our eldest two daughters “how’d we end up with you two?”

There was a beat, and then my eldest said, with a long drawl (imitating people who talk to children as if they are stupid), “Wellllll, when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much ….”

Gasoline: $Are you Freakin’ Kiddin me?

Hotel: $Why do we need two rooms?

Cubs tickets: $Thank God they won!

Time with daughters who really do have a sense of humor: $Priceless.

My daughter hasn’t uttered anything nearly as clever during our road trip….

I envy you and your daughters. This Cub fan only got to watch on TV. The only thing I don’t regret in not being there in person is St. Louis in July. I melt like a Hershey bar in the back window of a ’51 Chevy.
