What if we try THIS?

This is not a new thought

But we (humans, we thinkers of thoughts both large and small)
keep thinking it is ONE thing

If we do THIS,

 IT will change

But what if THIS
is actually a series of

THESE THINGS

Done both simultaneously AND sequentially

And what if each time
THIS and THESE THINGS
Are done

We ask, “is it mission-based?”

Which leads us to ask

What is the mission?

And if the mission is LOVE

Not making or holding money,
not market-dominance,
nor political dogma dominance,
not even MAKING things no one yet knows that they want

But LOVE

We would still be angry sometimes
and yell at the TV sometimes
We would still want more things sometimes
and better things all the times
We would still need to tell our children they can’t scream in the grocery store
or pick their noses in public
and tell our teen children that they need to be home by curfew BECAUSE I ASKED YOU TO
and don’t text at the table and
rolling your eyes is not witty repartee

BUT

Perhaps we would find new ways of expressing our anger
and desire
if we SEE
at the ROOT

our fear

we will not be protected
by our mission should (when)
THIS and THESE THINGS
not,
in fact,
Work.

But are we ever?
Protected, that is,
regardless of what mission drives us?

This is not a new thought
nor even very cleverly thought

But if LOVE is a verb and a mission
then vulnerability is it’s constant companion

And we need to access and accept it
rather than retrench and avoid it

Because THIS won’t always WORK

Nor will THESE THINGS
always work

But
LOVE abides
and
vulnerability strokes its hair in the night

And each morning, still we wake
a question poised in our hearts:
What if we try THIS?
